Internet Explorer 7 and CSS changes.

After a long wait, the newest Internet Explorer version is out, IE 7 release ( Team blog entry with download link).

Without a doubt the most interesting 'feature' -- as far as us application developers are concerned -- is the more than 200 behavior changes in CSS (read bugs and non-standard fixes ) , which will hopefully make good on not having to create a hacked CSS style-sheet to suit IE quirks.

Like any new software version, the real issue will become not just having CSS shortcomings fixed, but how fast the IE user base will upgrade to this new version, making it feasible to deploy a production type CSS that will be optimally rendered by end users.

On this note, a fellow blogger has an interesting post on IE 7 adoption rate , with comment and video from Chris Wilson - Lead program manager for the web platform in IE .

Update : Some concrete numbers as far as IE 7 installations are concerned: 100 Million IE7 Installations , which would come out to 1.25 million installations per day since the release, wow!. This is of course raw data provided by Microsoft, but an interesting piece of data would be how many of these installations were of the 'Automatic Windows *in your face* Update' and how many were actually 'I WENT to www and downloaded IE 7'.

As always, the browser wars seem like a never ending story : Despite 100 Million IE 7 Installs, Microsoft's Browser Still Loses Ground , guess even the open-source projects like Firefox/Mozilla always have an axe to grind.
