SDO revival and SCA.

It was probably blown off by most Java users as yet another Java specification in 2003, back when Java JSR's came out every week. Its name was JSR-235 or SDO ("Service Data Objects") , a heterogeneous data access mechanism for the Java world. But now in late 2006, SDO looks poised to make a comeback in light of it usage in service orientated architectures.

SDO will now form a tight companion with SCA("Service Component Architecture"), trying to bring forth the newest approach to achieving a service orientated architecture(SOA).

Like many other SOA initiatives, the programming language or vendor platform should be of little concern, all the more reason SDO's approach will likely be cast out of its Java mold and expanded into programming languages like PHP and C++ which also form part of most enterprise systems.

If you are in the Java world and have had no motivation to learn a "new data access mechanism" to add to your probably growing arsenal -- EJB, JDO Hibernate, JDBC and perhaps more -- then SDO might be a good choice, especially now that its making inroads into other platforms.

You can read further on the subject on an article I wrote on SDO and another on SCA .
