Image Annotations for the semantic web
The W3C is going full speed ahead with the series of recommendations for enabling the semantic web . An interesting paper has been published on Image Annotation on the Semantic Web .

While the document clearly states it will not evolve into a recommendation like many W3C working drafts, it addresses many of the issues that need to be taken into account in order to create semantic web friendly images, based on existing semantic web technologies such as RDF and OWL.
Needles to say, annotating images with these semantics goes a long way to stating an image's meaning and purpose, compared to the classic markup <img alt="Sunset at the Beach" src="Beach.jpg"/> declaration used in many web images today.
