Java highlights from JavaOne: Open Source and Hardware.

The premier Java event of the year -- JavaOne -- recently held in San Francisco came to a close, with two particular themes that in my humble opinion, will make echoes in the coming years.

Open Source embrace.

"Sun outlines open source plans" . I really never thought I would see a headline like that, if you have followed the "Java-Sun open source" fray for a few a years, then you know what I mean. From licensing issues with JBoss -- the open source J2EE application server provider -- to debates with IBM at the highest level of opening up the Java platform, Open Source along with Java, was something that Sun was not keen on mixing in past years, or at least, giving the impression of favoring.

The relevance of this open source embrace is due to the fact that its being done on server side platforms, like the open source releases of both an Application Server Platform Edition and an Enterprise Service Bus -- the latter one a push into SOA .

Hardware push.

Even though Java started out as a language for embedded devices, its now mainstream usage on server side web developments has not been tied to hardware, that is, up until now. BEA's plans for chip-based Java speed boost is just but a few of the initiatives announced which are aiming at linking Java execution directly at the hardware level.
