"The Other Mainstream" Misnomer ? Not in technology.

-Mainstream : a prevailing current or direction of influence

Research firms like Gartner & Forrester would have you believe that software development evolves mainly under one or two platforms -- "The Mainstream" -- yet if you analyze the concepts and idioms used by these technologies, you will surely find that some functionalites have been influenced in one form or another by other platforms.

Good ideas tend to be adopted -- eventually at least -- and software development has a plethora of niche technologies which have proven winners over the long run.

Although this site is classified into specific web technologies -- those in which I have more experience -- this section is reserved for those platforms that don't fall into the aforementioned categories, yet have the potential to set the direction of influence in web application development and be trendsetters in their own right.
