Mobile Web Initiative.

The W3C just announced at their 2005 conference that they will be launching the Mobile Web Initiative in an effort to standardize access to the web from mobile devices.

>However, if you look at the influence the W3C's currently has on the mobile world, you can't avoid to think that this new initiative is more of an endorsement for considering mobile devices first class citizens, than an actual breakthrough.

Take for example XHTML -- much of its DNA is thoroughly thought out to be device agnostic, surely not a coincidence in support of mobile devices, since it has given way to XHTML mobile profile. Other W3C standards in the graphical and multimedia arena have also given way to their mobile counterparts, like SVG Mobile and SMIL Mobile Profile . Even if you go back as far as 1997, you realize that the first markup language for mobile devices -- HDML -- was under the auspices of the W3C.

Being that the working group's details are still scant, we will have to wait and see if this new initiative will truly usher a new wave of mobile innovation or will just be a bigger umbrella under which to place the already extensive work done by W3C members.
